At the invitation of Academician Qian the Second, he ascended the seat and said: "To penetrate the barrier of birth and death, emerge from views of existence and non-existence, break free of the dynamic of the Buddhas and Patriarchs, and surpass the measure of ordinary standards, one must possess sharp faculties and superior wisdom, hearing once and awakening to a thousand things, directly accepting responsibility beneath it—only then can it be attained; letting go on that side, there is nothing further. Therefore it is said: 'How many times born, how many times dead? The realized one wanders leisurely without a fixed stopping place. Ever since sudden awakening to the complete absence of arising, what sorrow or joy is there in any honour or disgrace?' Do all of you recognise non-arising? The kalpa fire burns completely, consuming every fine hair; the green mountain remains as ever amid the white clouds."
