Requested by the Grand Defender in Charge of the Secretariat, ascending the hall, [the Master said]: "A single phrase manifestly brilliant right here: throughout the realm it has completely cut off all traps and cages. It does not flow from the marrow of the buddhas' minds, nor was it established before heaven and earth were born. It is just now, stern, solitary, and precarious, clear and pure, cutting off all reflection. If one possesses the eye that transcends directions and has dynamic sharpness beyond conventions, before the pattern and colors are displayed, one has already completely seen through it. By the time words and phrases are displayed, dynamics and circumstances established, questions and answers formed, and this and that distinguished, it directly becomes a thousand layers and a hundred folds, a hundred folds and a thousand layers, gathering up both middling and inferior capacities here at once. Is there anyone who bears witness on the spot and attains liberation directly under it? Try coming forward and bringing news of it! If not: prior to King of the Awesome Voice, it is brisk and lively; right up to the present, it is clean and bare." He further made a verse, saying: "The Dharma realm broadly embraces all; / The udumbara blossoms burst into bloom. / Universally perfumed by the power of prajñā, / Myriad virtues adorn themselves."
