Ascending the hall on the first day of the eighth month, a monk asked, "How is it when without passing through the conjured city one directly ascends to the jewel repository?" The Master said, "Filling the eyes, it is originally not form; filling the ears, it is originally not sound." The monk continued, "What about coming in person to the jewel mountain and returning empty-handed?" The Master said, "Entering a wild field without choosing." The Master then said, "What is higher than heaven? That which gives birth to heaven. What is thicker than earth? That which nurtures earth. What is wider than empty space? That which contains empty space. What transcends the Buddhas and patriarchs? That which plants the Buddhas and patriarchs. Outside the six directions, the Way alone exists, not to be debated. Judged according to the fundamental lot, not even half has been spoken. Do you know that gathering up the entire great earth, it is completely upon everyone's eyebrows and eyelashes, transforming into a Great General of Heaven, manifesting boundless spiritual powers? If you see it, you transform ordinary into holy; if you do not see it, by all means avoid hesitating. Turn the mechanism above, and divide into a hundred billion bodies, manifesting transformations without bound."
