上堂：「祖師道：『一心不生，萬法無咎，無咎無法，不生不心，能隨境滅，境逐能沈，境由能境，能由境能。』大小祖師却作座主見解，徑山即不然，眼不自見，刀不自割，喫飯濟飢，飲水定渴，臨濟德山特地迷枉，費精神施棒喝，除却棒、拈却喝，孟八郎漢，如何止遏。」

Ascending the hall: "The Patriarch said: 'When the one mind does not arise, the myriad dharmas are without fault. Without fault, there are no dharmas; not arising, there is no mind. The subject follows the object into extinction; the object pursues the subject into subsidence. The object is an object because of the subject; the subject is a subject because of the object.' For a great and small patriarch, he actually held the views of a lecturer! Jingshan is not like that: eyes do not see themselves; knives do not cut themselves. Eating food relieves hunger; drinking water quenches thirst. Linji and Deshan were deliberately deluded and astray, wasting energy wielding blows and shouts. Take away the blows and discard the shouts—how can reckless fellows like Meng the Eighth be restrained?"
