上堂，舉：「須菩提巖中宴坐，諸天雨華讚歎，尊者曰：『空中雨華讚歎者是何人？』曰：『我是梵天。』尊者曰：『汝云何讚歎？』天曰：『我重尊者善說般若。』尊者曰：『我於般若未曾說一字，云何言善說？』」師喝一喝云：「當時若下得這一喝，非但塞却梵天口，亦乃二千年後免被徑山檢點。天曰：『尊者無說，我乃無聞，無說無聞是真說般若。』」師又喝一喝云：「當時若下得這一喝，非但塞却須菩提口，亦乃二千年後免被徑山檢點。且道：徑山還有遭人檢點處也無？」自云：「有甚麼處是遭人檢點處？不合多口。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "When Subhūti was sitting peacefully in a rock cave, the gods rained down flowers in praise. The Venerable said, 'Who is raining down flowers in the sky in praise?' [A voice] said, 'I am Brahmā.' The Venerable said, 'Why do you praise me?' The god said, 'I revere the Venerable's skillful expounding of prajñā.' The Venerable said, 'Regarding prajñā, I have not expounded a single word; why do you say I expound it skillfully?'" The Master gave a shout and said: "If he had delivered this shout at that time, not only would it have stopped the mouth of Brahmā, but two thousand years later he would also have avoided Jingshan's critique. The god said, 'The Venerable has nothing expounded, and I have nothing heard; no expounding and no hearing is the true expounding of prajñā.'" The Master again gave a shout and said: "If he had delivered this shout at that time, not only would it have stopped the mouth of Subhūti, but two thousand years later he would also have avoided Jingshan's critique. But tell me: does Jingshan still have any place that invites critique?" He said himself: "What place is there to invite critique? I shouldn't have been so talkative."
