1.24

歲旦上堂，拈拄杖空中作書字勢云：「正朝把筆，萬事皆吉，應時納祐，慶無不宜。若作世諦流布，平地喫交；更在佛法商量；眉鬚墮落。」卓拄杖下座。

Ascending the hall on New Year's Day, he took up his staff, made a writing gesture in the air, and said, "Taking up the brush on New Year's morning, all matters are auspicious; receiving blessings according to the season, there is nothing that is not celebrated. If taken as mundane convention, one trips and falls on flat ground; if deliberated further in the Buddha-dharma, one's eyebrows and whiskers fall out." Striking his staff, he descended from the seat.
