上堂，僧問：「教中道：塵塵說剎剎說無間歇，未審以何為舌？」師拍禪床右角一下，進云：「世尊不說說，迦葉不聞聞也。」師拍禪狀左角一下，進云：「也知今日，令不虛行。」師云：「識甚好惡？」乃舉：「趙州問南泉：『知有底人，向甚麼處去？』泉云：『山前檀越家，作一頭水牯牛去。』州云：『謝師答話。』泉云：『昨夜三更月到窓。』雲峯云：『南泉若無後語，洎被打破蔡州。』」師云：「雲峯老人失却一隻眼，殊不知只因後語，當下打破蔡州。」

Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "The teachings say: 'Dust-mote by dust-mote preaches, land by land preaches, without cessation.' I wonder what serves as the tongue?" The Master struck the right corner of the meditation couch once. The monk advanced and said, "The World-Honoured One speaks without speaking; Kāśyapa hears without hearing." The Master struck the left corner of the meditation couch once. The monk advanced and said, "I also know that today the command is not executed in vain." The Master said, "What do you know of good and bad?" He then brought up: "Zhaozhou asked Nanquan, 'Where does a person who knows there is That go?' Nanquan said, 'He goes to the house of a donor in front of the mountain to become a water buffalo.' Zhaozhou said, 'I thank you, Master, for answering my question.' Nanquan said, 'Last night at the third watch, the moon reached the window.' Yunfeng said, 'If Nanquan had not had this subsequent remark, he would almost have had Caizhou breached.'" The Master said, "Old Yunfeng lost an eye. He completely failed to realize that it was precisely because of this subsequent remark that Caizhou was breached on the spot."
