上堂，舉：「興化謂克賓維那曰：『汝不久為唱導之師。』賓云：『不入這保社。』化云：『汝會了不入，不會不入？』賓云：『總不恁麼。』化便打云：『克賓維那法戰不勝，罰錢五貫，設鑽飯一堂。』來日興化自白槌云：『克賓維那法戰不勝，罰錢五貫，設鑽飯一堂，仍須出院。』雲居舜和尚云：『大冶精金應無變色，其奈興化令行太嚴，不是克賓維那也大難承當。總似而今泛泛之徒，翻轉面皮多少時也。』」師云：「雲居恁麼道，未免拗曲作直。徑山即不然，要作臨濟炟赫兒孫，直須翻轉面皮始得。」

Ascending the hall, [the Master] brought up: "Xinghua said to the karmadāna Kebin, 'Before long, you will become a guiding teacher.' Kebin said, 'I will not enter this association.' Xinghua said, 'Do you not enter having understood, or do you not enter without understanding?' Kebin said, 'Neither is the case at all.' Xinghua struck him and said, 'The karmadāna Kebin did not win the Dharma battle; he is fined five strings of cash and must provide a hall full of rice gruel.' The next day, Xinghua himself struck the gavel and said, 'The karmadāna Kebin did not win the Dharma battle; he is fined five strings of cash and must provide a hall full of rice gruel, and he must still leave the monastery.' Master Yunju Shun said, 'The refined gold from the great furnace should not change color; yet Xinghua's enforcement of the command was overly severe. If it had not been the karmadāna Kebin, it would have been exceedingly hard to bear. If it were like today's mediocre lot, how many times would they have turned their faces in anger?'" The Master said, "Yunju speaking like this cannot avoid bending the crooked to make it straight. Jingshan is not like that: if you want to be a glorious descendant of Linji, you must turn your face in anger before you can attain it."
