南院上堂云：「赤肉團上壁立千仞。」時有僧問：「赤肉團上壁立千仞，豈不是和尚道？」院云：「是。」僧便掀倒禪床，院云：「爾看這瞎漢亂做。」僧擬議，院便打趁出院。頌云：

Nanyuan entered the hall and said, 'Upon the red lump of flesh, steep precipices stand a thousand fathoms high.' At the time a monk asked, '"Upon the red lump of flesh, steep precipices stand a thousand fathoms high"—isn't that what the Venerable said?' Nanyuan said, 'It is.' The monk then overturned the Chan bench. Nanyuan said, 'Look at this blind fellow making a wild mess!' The monk hesitated; Nanyuan struck him and drove him out of the monastery. A verse says:
