(35; Renzi [952]) Chan Master Baoying Nanyuan Yong of Ruzhou entered cessation. The master was a native of Hebei and an heir of Chan Master Xinghua Jiang. Ascending the hall, he instructed the assembly, saying: 'Upon the lump of red flesh, a precipice rises thousands of cubits!' At that time a monk asked, '"Upon the lump of red flesh, a precipice rises thousands of cubits"—is that not the Venerable's own phrase?' The master said, 'It is.' That monk thereupon overturned the meditation bench. Nanyuan said, 'Give this blind ass the stick!' He also said, 'Those everywhere only possess the eye of pecking and tapping simultaneously, but do not possess the function of pecking and tapping simultaneously.' A monk promptly asked, 'What is the function of pecking and tapping simultaneously?' He said, 'An adept does not peck and tap; simultaneously both are lost.' The monk said, 'This is still not where I am asking.' He said, 'How is the place of your asking?' The monk said, 'Lost.' The master struck him. The monk did not accept it. Later, under Yunmen's assembly, he heard two monks bringing up the previous encounter. One monk said, 'At that time, was Nanyuan's stick broken?' Hearing these words, the monk suddenly had a great awakening and only then saw the place of Nanyuan's response. The monk then returned to Ruzhou to pay homage. Encountering the master's passing, he visited Fengxue. Fengxue recognized him and asked, 'Are you the senior monk who asked Nanyuan about pecking and tapping simultaneously back then?' The monk said, 'I am.' Fengxue said, 'Do you understand yet?' The monk said, 'I understand.' Fengxue said, 'How did you understand back then?' The monk said, 'At that time, it was as if I was walking in the shadows of a lamp.' Fengxue said, 'You understand.'
