The venerable Wuzu cited: "A monk asked Zhaozhou, 'What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?' Zhaozhou said, 'The cypress tree in the courtyard.' 'If understood like this, then it is not.' 'What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?' 'The cypress tree in the courtyard.' 'Only when understood like this is it so.'"
