師臨示寂，親書遺奏畢，侍僧乞留頌，師厲聲曰：「無頌便死不得也？」乃大書云：

When the Master approached passing away, having personally written his final memorial, the attendant monk begged for a gāthā. The Master said in a stern voice: 'Can one not die without a gāthā?' Thereupon he wrote in large characters:
