Literati read widely among various books originally to nourish and benefit their nature and discernment, yet instead they retain the words of the ancients, storing them in their breasts to make a career and supply topics for conversation. They fail completely to understand the sage's intention in establishing the teachings, which is like counting others' treasures all day long without having half a coin of one's own. Reading Buddhist teachings is also like this: you must see the moon and forget the finger, and not produce understanding based on words. An ancient worthy said: "The Buddha spoke all dharmas to save all minds; I have no mind at all, so of what use are all dharmas?" If scholars with resolve can read books and study teachings like this, only then do they embody a small part of the sage's intention.
