19.15

歸宗斬蛇，南泉斬猫兒，學語之流，多謂之當機妙用，亦謂之大用現前不存軌則殊不知，總不是這般道理具超方眼，舉起便知落處，若大法不明，打瓦鑽龜何時是了。

Guizong cutting the snake and Nanquan cutting the cat are mostly called by word-reciting sorts wondrous functions responsive to the occasion, or the great function appearing without abiding by rules and regulations. Little do they know that it is not that kind of principle at all. If you possess the eye that transcends directions, as soon as it is brought up you know where it lands; if the great Dharma is not clear, when will cracking tiles and drilling tortoise shells ever end?
