19.17

近日叢林，以古人奇言妙語問答，為差別因緣狐媚學者，殊不本其實。諸佛說法，唯恐人不會，縱有隱覆之說，則旁引譬喻，令眾生悟入而已。如僧問馬祖：「如何是佛？」祖云：「即心是佛。」於此悟入，又有何差別？於此不悟，即此即心是佛，便是差別因緣。

Recently in the monasteries, they take the ancient masters' extraordinary words and marvelous sayings in question and answer to be differentiated conditions and bewitch students with them, completely failing to base themselves on the reality. The buddhas preach the Dharma only fearing that people will not understand; even if there are hidden or covered teachings, they draw upon analogies alongside to cause sentient beings to awaken and enter, and that is all. For instance, a monk asked Mazu: "What is the Buddha?" Mazu said: "Mind itself is Buddha." When awakening and entering here, what differentiation is there? If you do not awaken here, this very "mind itself is Buddha" becomes a differentiated condition.
