2.20

上堂，僧問：「翠巖示眾云：『一夏與兄弟東說西話，看翠巖眉毛在麼？』意旨如何？」師云：「自首者原其罪。」進云：「保福道：『作賊人心虛。』又作麼生？」師云：「驢揀濕處尿。」進云：「長慶道：『生也。』雲門云：『關。』又且如何？」師云：「一箇破糞箕，對箇禿苕帚。」進云：「後有老宿云：『翠巖無風起浪。』作麼生見得？」師云：「作麼見不得？」乃云：「廓然無聖，不用躊躇，蓋色騎聲，全承渠力。諸佛以此度生，衲僧以此為命，露裸裸赤灑灑沒可把，行但行，坐但坐，饑來喫飯，寒來向火。直饒恁麼，末稱衲僧。不見白雲師翁有言：『有時碓嘴生華，有時佛面百醜，李公醉倒街頭，自是張公喫酒，燈籠皺斷眉頭，露柱呵呵拍手。』且道：露柱拍手成得箇甚麼邊事？參！」

Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "Ciyan instructed the assembly, saying: 'All summer I have chattered east and west with the brothers; look and see if Cuiyan's eyebrows are still there.' What was the meaning?" The Master said, "One who confesses voluntarily has his crime pardoned." The monk went on, "Baofu said, 'The thief's heart is timid.' What about that?" The Master said, "A donkey chooses a wet spot to piss." The monk went on, "Changqing said, 'Grown.' Yunmen said, 'Barrier.' What about those?" The Master said, "A broken dung-basket facing a bald broom." The monk went on, "Later an elder master said, 'Cuiyan makes waves without wind.' How is that seen?" The Master said, "How is it not seen?" He then said, "Vast and without holiness—no need to hesitate. Covering form and riding sound, it relies entirely on its power. The buddhas use this to deliver sentient beings; patch-robed monks use this as their life-force. Stark naked and bare-stripped, with nothing to grasp: when walking just walk, when sitting just sit; when hungry eat rice, when cold face the fire. Even if you are like this, you do not yet deserve to be called a patch-robed monk. Have you not seen what Grandfather Master Baiyun said: / 'Sometimes the pestle's tip blooms with flowers; / sometimes the Buddha's face suffers a hundred uglinesses. / Master Li falls drunk in the street, / but naturally it was Master Zhang who drank the wine. / The lantern wrinkles its brow completely; / the open pillar claps its hands with a hearty laugh.' / Tell me: what sort of matter on the edge is accomplished by the open pillar clapping its hands? Examine!"
