3.31

上堂，僧問：「明頭來時如何？」師云：「頭大尾顛纖。」進云：「暗頭來時如何？」師云：「野馬嘶風蹄撥剌。」進云：「明日大悲院裏有齋，又作麼生？」師云：「雪峯道底。」乃云：「明頭來明頭打，開眼著；暗頭來暗頭打，閉眼著；四方八面來旋風打，漏逗不少；虛空裏來連架打，著甚來由；總不恁麼來，却較些子。明日大悲院裏有齋，特地一場愁。」復云：「古人恁麼道，今人恁麼提，於宗乘中成得甚麼邊事？」喝一喝。

Ascending the hall, a monk asked: "What about when bright things come?" The Master said: "A big head and a tapering tail." The monk asked further: "What about when dark things come?" The Master said: "A wild horse neighs in the wind, its hooves trampling splashingly." The monk asked further: "Tomorrow there will be a vegetarian feast at the Great Compassion Monastery; what about that?" The Master said: "What Xuefeng said." He then said: "When bright things come, strike at the bright things—open your eyes; when dark things come, strike at the dark things—close your eyes; when things come from all four quarters and eight directions, strike like a whirlwind—no small amount of blundering; when things come from empty space, strike with flails linked together—what reason was there to get involved? When none of them come at all, it is somewhat better. Tomorrow there will be a vegetarian feast at the Great Compassion Monastery; an extraordinary cause for gloom." He further said: "The ancients spoke like this, and people today bring it up like this; what side of the matter has been accomplished within the patriarchal school?" He gave a shout.
