4.23

上堂，舉：「僧問芭蕉：『不落諸緣，請師直指。』蕉云：『有問有答。』」師云：「芭蕉雖善用劍刃上事，子細檢點將來，大似日中逃影，辜負這僧。今日或有人問徑山：『不落諸緣請師直指。』只向他道：『猩猩雖能言，畢竟是畜類。』」

Ascending the hall, the Master brought up: "A monk asked Bajiao: 'Not falling into various conditions, please point it out directly, Master.' Bajiao said: 'There is a question, there is an answer.'" The Master said: "Although Bajiao was skillful in handling matters on the sword's blade, if you inspect it closely, it is very much like fleeing from one's shadow in the midday sun, failing this monk. If today someone asked Jingshan: 'Not falling into various conditions, please point it out directly, Master,' I would only say to him: 'Although an orangutan can speak, in the end it is a beast.'"
