4.24

上堂，僧問：「祖師心印，狀似鐵牛之機，則且置；只如九年面壁，明甚麼邊事？」師云：「橫身當宇宙，誰是出頭人。」進云：「隻履西歸還端的也無？」師云：「不端的。」進云：「也知和尚慣用此機。」師云：「是。」僧便喝，師亦喝，乃云：「適來善修一喝，驚天動地，徑山隨後一喝，全無巴鼻。若向無巴鼻處會得，便解將一條斷貫索，穿却天下人鼻孔；若向驚天動地處承當，自己鼻孔却被別人將一條斷貫索穿却。正當恁麼時，如何免得此過？咄！咄！咄！沒處去，沒處去。」

Ascending the hall, a monk asked: "Setting aside for a moment that the Patriarch's mind seal is like the mechanism of an iron ox, what matter was illuminated by facing the wall for nine years?" The Master said: "Spanning his body across the universe, who is the person sticking out his head?" The monk continued: "Is returning to the West with a single shoe authentic or not?" The Master said: "Not authentic." The monk continued: "I know the Master is accustomed to using this device." The Master said: "Yes." The monk then shouted; the Master also shouted, and then said: "Just now Shanxiu gave a shout that shook heaven and moved earth; Jingshan followed with a shout that had no clue at all. If you understand at the place where there is no clue, then you will know how to take a broken connecting cord and pierce the nostrils of everyone under heaven. If you take it up at the place that shakes heaven and moves earth, your own nostrils will be pierced by someone else taking a broken connecting cord. Right at such a time, how can this fault be avoided? Du! Du! Du! Nowhere to go, nowhere to go."
