上堂，舉：「南泉示眾云：『文殊、普賢昨夜三更相打，每人與二十棒，趁出院也。』趙州出眾云：『和尚棒教誰喫？』泉云：『王老師過在甚處？』州乃作禮。」師云：「南泉無過，口能招禍；趙州禮拜，草賊大敗。徑山不管，結案據欵，文殊、普賢，且過一邊。」

Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "Nanquan instructed the assembly, saying: 'Last night at the third watch, Mañjuśrī and Samantabhadra were fighting with each other. I gave each of them twenty blows with the staff and drove them out of the monastery.' Zhaozhou came out from the assembly and said, 'Whom does the Venerable have take the blows?' Nanquan said, 'Where is Teacher Wang's fault?' Zhaozhou then made prostrations." The Master said, "Nanquan had no fault, but his mouth could summon calamity; Zhaozhou bowed down, and the grass-brigand was utterly routed. Jingshan does not care: closing the case according to the confession, Mañjuśrī and Samantabhadra can step aside for a while."
