4.44

上堂，舉：「睦州問秀才：『先輩治甚經？』才云：『治易。』州云：『易中道「百姓日用而不知」，不知箇甚麼？』才云：『不知其道。』州云：『作麼生是道？』才無語，州云：『果然不知。』」師云：「秀才雖然無語，默契睦州，只是少末後一著。徑山當時若見睦州道果然不知，但撫掌呵呵大笑，管取睦州不相虧。」

Ascending the high seat, [the Master] cited: "Muzhou asked a scholar, 'What classic does the senior cultivate?' The scholar said, 'I cultivate the Changes.' Muzhou said, 'In the Changes it says, "The common people use it daily yet do not know it"—what do they not know?' The scholar said, 'They do not know its Way.' Muzhou said, 'What is the Way?' The scholar was silent. Muzhou said, 'Truly, you do not know.'" The Master said, "Although the scholar was silent and silently tallied with Muzhou, he was merely lacking the very last move. Had Jingshan seen Muzhou say 'Truly, you do not know' at that time, I would only have clapped my hands and laughed ha-ha, ensuring that Muzhou would not get the better of me."
