Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "What is it like when mind and Buddha are both forgotten?" The Master said, "An old woman selling fans shields the sun with her hand." He then said, "Mind and Buddha are not two; things and self are as one. If you truly attain this oneness, then you do not see names of things and self; if you truly attain this non-duality, then you do not see marks of mind and Buddha. Since you do not see marks of mind and Buddha, then the entire mind is simply Buddha, and the entire Buddha is simply mind. Since you do not see names of things and self, then all things are simply oneself, and oneself is simply all things. If during the twenty-four hours of daily life you realize and enter in this way, then whether mind or Buddha, whether self or things, all ups and downs become useful function, and you can take a stalk of grass and make it into the sixteen-foot golden body, and take the sixteen-foot golden body and turn it back into a stalk of grass. Even if you are like this, take care not to pass before Jingshan's gate, lest I break your back with a staff. Do not say I did not tell you!"
