上堂，舉：「教云：『更以異方便，助顯第一義。』」師拈拄杖卓一下云：「這箇是異方便，那箇是第一義？」擲下云：「大蟲裹紙帽，好笑又驚人。」

Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "The teaching says, 'Furthermore, with different expedient means, one assists in revealing the paramārtha.'" The Master picked up his staff, struck [the floor] once, and said, "This is the different expedient means; which one is the paramārtha?" Throwing it down, he said, "A tiger wearing a paper hat: ridiculous, yet terrifying!"
