5.13

上堂，舉：「仰山一日與嬾安看雨次，安云：『好雨寂闍黎。』山云：『好在甚麼處？』安無語，山云：『某甲却道得。』安云：『好在甚麼處？』山以手指雨，安便休去。」師云：「一人只知看雨，一人只知指雨，子細檢點將來，大似釘樁搖艣。育王當時待他道『好在什麼處？』只向他道：『滴穿眼睛，浸爛鼻孔。』或有箇衲僧出來道：『育王也是釘樁搖艣。』却許他具眼。」

Ascending the hall, [the Master] brought up: "One day, while Yangshan and Lanan were watching the rain, An said, 'Good rain, Master Ji.' Yangshan said, 'Where is it good?' An was speechless. Yangshan said, 'I, on the contrary, can say.' An said, 'Where is it good?' Yangshan pointed with his finger to the rain, and An then rested." The Master said, "One person only knew to watch the rain; one person only knew to point to the rain. Examining them closely, it is much like driving in a stake to rock an oar. Had Yuwang been there at that time, waiting for him to say 'Where is it good?', I would only have said to him: 'It drips through your eyes, it soaks and rots your nostrils.' Were a patch-robed monk to come forward and say, 'Yuwang is also driving in a stake to rock an oar,' I would concede that he possesses the eye."
