上堂，舉：「五祖師翁舉僧問趙州：『如何是祖師西來意？』州云：『庭前柏樹子。』恁麼會，便不是了也。如何是祖師西來意？庭前柏樹子，恁麼會，方始是。」師云：「要識五祖師翁麼？腦後見腮，莫與往來。」

Ascending the hall, [the Master] brought up: "Grandfather-master Wuzu cited a monk asking Zhaozhou, 'What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?' Zhaozhou said, 'The cypress tree in the courtyard.' To understand it like this is immediately not it. 'What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West? The cypress tree in the courtyard.' Only when understood like this is it finally it." The Master said, "Do you wish to recognize Grandfather-master Wuzu? His cheekbones can be seen from behind his head; do not associate with him!"
