6.9

上堂，舉：「趙州一日與文遠侍者論義，鬪劣不鬪勝，勝者輸餬餅。遠云：『請和尚立義。』州云：『我是一頭驢。』遠云：『某是驢胃。』州云：『我是驢糞。』遠云：『某是糞中蟲。』州云：『汝在彼中作甚麼？』遠云：『某在彼中過夏。』州云：『把將餬餅來。』」師云：「文遠在驢糞中過夏，面赤不如語直。趙州貪他小利，贏得箇餬餅，檢點將來，也是普州人送賊。且道畢竟如何？」良久云：「鵝王擇乳，素非鴨類。」

Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "One day, Zhaozhou was debating with Attendant Wenyuan, contesting who was inferior, not who was superior; the winner was to lose a pancake. Wenyuan said: 'Please, Venerable, set up the proposition.' Zhaozhou said: 'I am a donkey.' Wenyuan said: 'I am the donkey's stomach.' Zhaozhou said: 'I am the donkey's dung.' Wenyuan said: 'I am a worm in the dung.' Zhaozhou said: 'What are you doing in there?' Wenyuan said: 'I am spending the summer retreat in there.' Zhaozhou said: 'Bring out the pancake!'"
The Master said: "Wenyuan spending the summer retreat in donkey dung: a red face is not as good as straight speech. Zhaozhou coveting petty gain from another and winning a pancake: upon scrutiny, this is also like a man from Puzhou escorting a thief. But in the end, what about it?" After a long pause, he said: "The King of Geese chooses the milk; it has never been of the duck kind."
