示眾：「入水不避蛟龍，漁父之勇也；陸行不避虎兕，獵夫之勇也；白刃臨前視死若生者，將軍之勇也。作麼生是衲僧之勇？」良久云：「大膽駕頭衝突過，小膽哀鳴告所由。」喝一喝。

Instructing the assembly, [the Master] said: "Entering the water without avoiding flood dragons is the bravery of a fisherman. Walking on land without avoiding tigers and rhinoceroses is the bravery of a hunter. Facing a bare blade and regarding death as life is the bravery of a general. What is the bravery of a patch-robed monk?" After a pause he said, "The bold one crashes through the imperial carriage; the timid one wails and cries out his reasons." He gave a shout.
