7.15

示眾：「或是或非人不識，逆行順行天莫測，隔山人唱鷓鴣詞，錯認胡笳十八拍。」遂舉拂子云：「這箇只是犛牛尾拂子，不得作是非逆順商量。作麼生識？作麼生測？」良久云：「無人過價，打與三百。」擊禪床一下。

Instructing the assembly, [the Master] said: "Whether right or wrong, people do not recognize it; walking backward or forward, the heavens cannot fathom it. A person across the mountain sings the partridge song; mistaken for the eighteen beats of the barbarian reed pipe." He then raised his fly-whisk and said, "This is merely a yak-tail fly-whisk; do not treat it as right or wrong, backward or forward, for deliberation. How will you recognize it? How will you fathom it?" After a pause he said, "No one bids a price—give them three hundred blows." He struck the meditation couch once.
