7.25

示眾，舉：「招慶普請擔泥次，中路按拄杖問僧云：『上窟泥？下窟泥？』僧云：『上窟泥。』慶打一棒，又問一僧：『上窟泥？下窟泥？』僧云：『下窟泥。』慶亦打一棒。又問明招，招放下泥擔叉手云：『請師鑑。』招慶便休。」師云：「招慶雖然休去，爭奈明招不甘。雲門當時若見他放下泥擔云：『請師鑑。』劈脊也與一棒，看他如何折合。」

Instructing the assembly, he brought up the following: "When Zhaoqing was carrying mud during communal labor, he propped up his staff midway and asked a monk, 'Mud from the upper pit, or mud from the lower pit?' The monk said, 'Mud from the upper pit.' Zhaoqing struck him a blow. He also asked another monk, 'Mud from the upper pit, or mud from the lower pit?' The monk said, 'Mud from the lower pit.' Zhaoqing also struck him a blow. He then asked Mingzhao. Mingzhao set down his load of mud, crossed his hands, and said, 'Please scrutinize, Master.' Zhaoqing then desisted."
The Master said, "Although Zhaoqing desisted, Mingzhao, as it turned out, was not satisfied. If Yunmen had seen him then set down his load of mud and say, 'Please scrutinize, Master,' he would have given him a blow right across the back to see how he settled it."
