7.30

示眾，舉：「白雲祥和尚問僧：『不壞假名而談實相，作麼生？』僧云：『這箇是椅子。』白雲以手撥云：『將鞵袋來。』僧無對，白雲云：『這虛頭漢。』雲門聞云：『須是祥兄始得。』」師云：「雲門扶彊不扶弱，爭奈憐兒不覺醜。這僧當時若是箇漢，待他道將鞵袋來，便與掀倒禪床，直饒白雲牙如劍樹、口似血盆，也分疎不下。」

Instructing the assembly, he brought up the following: "Venerable Baiyun Xiang asked a monk, 'Without destroying conventional designations, how do you speak of the true characteristic?' The monk said, 'This is a chair.' Baiyun pushed it with his hand and said, 'Bring the shoe-bag here.' The monk had no reply. Baiyun said, 'This phony fellow!' Yunmen heard this and said, 'It had to be Elder Brother Xiang to pull it off.'"
The Master said, "Yunmen supports the strong and does not support the weak, but loving one's child, one does not notice their ugliness. If that monk at that time had been a real fellow, waiting for him to say 'Bring the shoe-bag here,' he would have overturned the meditation seat. Even if Baiyun had teeth like a forest of swords and a mouth like a basin of blood, he could not have explained his way out."
