示眾：「古人道：『他人住處我不住，他人行處我不行，不是與人難共聚，大都緇素要分明。』」喝一喝云：「猶有這箇在。雲門即不然，他人住處我亦住，他人行處我亦行，瞥喜瞥瞋無理會，新羅夜半日頭明。且道與古人相去多少？試定當看。」

Instructing the assembly, [the Master] said: "An ancient said: 'Where others stay, I do not stay; where others walk, I do not walk. Not that I find it hard to gather with others—in general, black and white must be distinct.'" He gave a shout and said, "There is still this [distinction] remaining! Yunmen is not so: where others stay, I also stay; where others walk, I also walk. Sudden joy, sudden anger, with no calculation; at midnight in Silla, the sun shines bright. Tell me, how far apart is this from the ancient? Try to determine it and see."
