示眾：「心不是佛，智不是道，南泉老人和身放倒。至今數百年來，其間無數善知識出世，未曾有一人為他扶起。雲門今日擬將燈心拄須彌山，試為扶起看。」遂拈拄杖云：「南泉放倒，雲門扶起，放倒扶起，有賓有主。明眼衲僧商量，切忌別作道理。既許商量，為甚麼不許作道理？」良久云：「相罵饒汝接嘴，相唾饒汝潑水。」卓一下。

Instructing the assembly, [the Master] said: "'Mind is not the buddha, wisdom is not the Way'—old Nanquan threw his whole body down. For several hundred years since then, countless good spiritual friends have appeared in the world during this time, yet not one has ever helped him up. Today Yunmen plans to use a lamp wick to prop up Mount Sumeru, and try to help him up for you to see." He then took up his staff and said, "Nanquan threw himself down, Yunmen helps him up; throwing down and helping up have guest and host. Patch-robed monks with clear eyes deliberating this must strictly avoid creating other principles. Since deliberation is allowed, why is making principles not allowed?" After a pause he said, "If you scold, I allow you to join your lips [in retort]; if you spit, I allow you to splash water." He struck once [with his staff].
