蔡郎中請示眾：「聊聞舉著便承當，好肉無端已剜瘡，著眼機輪上頭看，方知兩兩不成雙。」驀拈拄杖云：「見之不取，千載難忘，三世諸佛諸代祖師天下老和尚，被雲門拄杖子一口吞盡，一大藏教填溝塞壑，正當恁麼時，設使德山棒如雨點，臨濟喝似雷奔，還如氈上翻筋斗，鞾裏動指頭，有甚麼用處？恁麼說話，太殺壓良為賤，不識好惡，或被一箇不惜性命底衲僧出來掀倒禪床喝散大眾，也怪他不得。即今還有麼？如無，雲門據欵結案去也。」卓拄杖一下，復舉：「裴相國捧一尊像，胡跪於黃檗前云：『請師安名。』檗云：『裴休。』裴應諾，檗云：『與汝安名竟。』裴作禮云：『謝師安名。』」師云：「裴公黃檗，可謂如水入水，似金博金。雖然如是，檢點將來，不無滲漏。今日蔡郎中，或捧一尊像，請雲門安名，即向道：『清淨法身毘盧遮那佛。』若云：『謝師安名。』即向道：『下坡不走，快便難逢。』」

At the request of Bureau Director Cai, he instructed the assembly: / "Just hearing it brought up, one takes it upon oneself; / Sound flesh is pointlessly gouged into a wound. / Cast your eyes upon the turning of the mechanism, / Only then will you know that the pair does not make a twin." / Suddenly holding up his staff, he said, "Seeing it and not taking it, a thousand ages are hard to forget. The Buddhas of the three times, the patriarchs of all generations, and all the venerable old monks throughout the world are swallowed in a single gulp by Yunmen's staff; the great canon of teachings fills gullies and clogs ravines. Just at such a time, even if Deshan's blows were like raindrops and Linji's shouts were like rushing thunder, it would still be like somersaulting on a felt rug or wiggling one's toes inside a boot—of what use would it be? To speak like this is excessively pressing the free into servitude and not recognizing good from bad. If some patch-robed monk who does not care for his life were to come out, overturn the Chan seat, and shout to scatter the great assembly, you could not blame him. Is there anyone right now? If not, Yunmen will conclude the case based on the confession." He struck the staff once, and then cited: "Prime Minister Pei held a statue, knelt on both knees before Huangbo, and said, 'Please, Master, bestow a name upon it.' Huangbo said, 'Pei Xiu!' Pei responded, 'Yes?' Huangbo said, 'I have finished bestowing a name upon you.' Pei bowed and said, 'Thank you, Master, for bestowing the name.'" The Master said, "Lord Pei and Huangbo can be called water entering water, gold exchanged for gold. Even so, examining it thoroughly, there are leaks. Today, if Bureau Director Cai were to hold a statue and ask Yunmen to bestow a name, I would immediately say to him, 'The pure Dharmakāya, Vairocana Buddha.' If he said, 'Thank you, Master, for bestowing the name,' I would immediately say to him, 'Do not run down the slope; a swift opportunity is hard to meet.'"
