8.40

端午示眾，拈拄杖舉：「雲門大師道：『從上諸聖，為甚麼不到這裏？』蓮華峯菴主道：『古人到這裏，為甚麼不肯住？』」師云：「二尊宿，拆東籬補西壁，抱橋柱澡洗，把纜放船即不無，要且無為人底道理。雲門即不然，未到這裏教伊到，已到這裏教伊頭破腦裂，且道：還有為人處也無？」良久云：「一二三四五，虛空闕處補，五四三二一，當門書大吉，好手揮斤去鼻泥，衲僧機妙安能識？驀然識，百草頭邊露消息。且作麼生是露底消息？唵部臨唵齒臨，急急如律令。」卓一下。

On the Dragon Boat Festival, he instructed the assembly, holding up his staff and citing: "Great Master Yunmen said, 'Why have the sages of the past not reached here?' The Hermit of Lotus Peak said, 'When the ancients reached here, why were they unwilling to stay?'" The Master said, "These two venerable elders were taking down the eastern fence to patch the western wall, embracing the bridge pillar to wash, holding the cable to let loose the boat—not that they lacked that, but ultimately they had no principle for helping people. Yunmen is not so: if you have not reached here, he makes you reach it; if you have already reached here, he shatters your head and cracks your brains. Tell me, is there any way he helps people?" After a long pause, he said, "'One, two, three, four, five—patching where empty space is deficient; five, four, three, two, one—writing "Great Auspiciousness" right on the door.' A skilled hand swings the axe to shear off mud from the nose—how could one fathom the wondrous function of a patch-robed monk? If you suddenly recognize it, the news is exposed right at the tips of the hundred grasses. And what is the exposed news? Oṃ bhrūṃ oṃ chrīṃ, swiftly in accordance with the statutes and ordinances!" He struck [the seat] once.
