8.42

示眾，舉：「僧問雲門：『達磨九年面壁，意旨如何？』門云：『念七。』」師云：「念七念七，全無消息，背看分明，正觀難識。既是正觀，為甚麼難識？可知禮也。」

Instructing the assembly, he brought up [the following]: "A monk asked Yunmen, 'What was the intended meaning of Bodhidharma facing the wall for nine years?' Yunmen said, 'Twenty-seven.'" The Master said, "'Twenty-seven, twenty-seven'—utterly without news. Seen from behind, it is distinct; viewed head-on, it is hard to recognize. Since it is viewed head-on, why is it hard to recognize? 'One can know proprietary etiquette.'"
