8.44

示眾，舉：「龐居士云：『心如境亦如，無實亦無虛，有亦不管，無亦不拘，不是聖賢，了事凡夫。』」師云：「白的的，清寥寥，水不能濡，火不能燒，是箇甚麼？切不得問著，問著則瞎却爾眼。」以拄杖擊香臺一下。

Instructing the assembly, he brought up [the following]: "Layman Pang said: 'The mind is as such, the objective realm is also as such; neither real nor unreal. Not concerned with existence, not restricted by non-existence; not a sage or worthy, but an ordinary fellow who has finished his business.'" The Master said, "Pure white, clean and desolate, water cannot wet it, fire cannot burn it—what is it? You must by no means ask about it; if you ask about it, your eyes will be blinded." He struck the incense stand once with his staff.
