9.26

師纔見僧入，便云：「不是，出去。」僧便出，師云：「沒量大人被語脈裏轉却。」次一僧入，師亦云：「不是，出去。」僧却近前，師云：「向爾道不是，更近前覓箇甚麼？」便打出。復一僧入云：「適來兩僧不會和尚意。」師低頭噓一聲，僧罔措，師便打云：「却是爾會老僧意。」

As soon as the Master saw a monk enter, he said, "Not right, get out." The monk went out. The Master said, "A great man of immeasurable stature, turned around by the thread of words!" Next, a monk entered. The Master also said, "Not right, get out." The monk instead stepped forward. The Master said, "I told you it is not right; why step further forward seeking something?" and drove him out with blows. Another monk entered and said, "Just now those two monks did not understand the Venerable's intention." The Master lowered his head and let out a sigh. The monk was at a loss. The Master then struck him and said, "Yet you understand this old monk's intention!"
