9.35

問侍者云：「許多人入室，幾人道得著？幾人道不著？」侍者云：「某甲只管看。」師展手云：「我手何似佛手？」侍者云：「天寒且請和尚通袖。」便行，師隨後打一竹篦云：「且道：是賞爾？是罰爾？」

He asked his attendant, "So many people have entered my room; how many hit the mark, and how many missed the mark?" The attendant said, "I only watch." The Master held out his hand and said, "How does my hand resemble a Buddha's hand?" The attendant said, "The weather is cold; please tuck your hands into your sleeves, Venerable," and walked away. The Master struck him from behind with a bamboo comb, saying, "Tell me: is this rewarding you or punishing you?"
