9.34

師纔見僧入，便云：「釋迦老子來也。」僧近前，師云：「元來不是。」便打。次一僧入，師亦云：「釋迦老子來也。」僧當面問訊便出，師云：「却似真箇。」

As soon as the Master saw a monk enter, he said, "Old Śākya has arrived!" The monk stepped forward. The Master said, "So it was not him after all," and struck him. Next, a monk entered, and the Master likewise said, "Old Śākya has arrived!" The monk made a greeting right to his face and went out. The Master said, "He really seemed like the real thing."
