Ascending the hall, he cited: "The teaching says: 'One should thus know, thus see, thus have faith and understanding, not producing signs of phenomena.'" The Master held up his fly-whisk and said, "This is Jingshan's fly-whisk; what do you call signs of phenomena? Since signs of phenomena cannot be attained, what do you know? What do you see? In what do you have faith? What do you understand?" Again holding it up, he said, "These are signs of phenomena; what, then, do you call a fly-whisk? Since the fly-whisk cannot be attained, thus knowing, thus seeing, and thus having faith and understanding—what fault is there? Right at such a time, how do you say a turning phrase? A thousand layers, a hundred wraps, with no mutual hindrance; everyone in a quiet place: svāhā!"
