There is a sort of person who reads sūtras, recites the Buddha's name, and repents in the morning, yet in the evening gives free rein to verbal karma and curses people, and the next day bows to the Buddha and repents as before; year in and year out, they take this as their daily practice—this is the height of foolishness. They completely fail to understand that the Sanskrit term kṣama means repenting mistakes here, which refers to cutting off the mind of continuation: once cut off, it is never continued again; once repented, it is never committed again. This is our Buddha's meaning of repentance, and students of the Way cannot fail to understand it.
