A student of the Way must always keep the mind and mental consciousness quiet and still in all twenty-four hours of the day; when there is nothing to do, one must also sit quietly, causing the mind not to be negligent and the body not to waver. Practicing this for a long time until it becomes familiar, body and mind will naturally be tranquil, and you will have a share in orienting toward the Way. The pāramitā of quietude calms the scattered, distracted, and deluded consciousness of sentient beings, that is all. If you cling to the place of quietude as the ultimate, you will be caught and held by the heterodox Chan of silent illumination.
