For practitioners of the Way, in daily life emptying objects is easy, but emptying the mind is difficult. When objects are empty but the mind is not empty, the mind is overcome by objects. Simply empty the mind and objects will naturally become empty. If the mind is already empty, yet one further gives rise to a second thought wishing to empty its objects, then this mind has not yet become empty, and is again snatched away by objects. If this disease is not eliminated, there will be no way to escape birth and death. Have you not seen Layman Pang's verse presented to Mazu: 'Together from the ten directions we gather, / each studying non-action. / This is the arena for selecting buddhas; / with empty mind, we pass the examination and return home.' Since this mind is already empty, what thing outside the mind is there that can be emptied? Reflect on this.
