When someone entered their gate, the ancients would immediately strike and shout, fearing only that the student would not undertake it with urgency, let alone chattering on, speaking of phenomena and principle, speaking of the mysterious and wondrous, rolling about in the grass! In recent years, this Way has declined. Those who occupy the high seat and act as teachers merely take the gong'ans of the ancients, praising or disparaging them, or making secret-room transmissions, regarding these as the Chan Way; or they take remaining silent without words, as the matter before the empty kalpa on that other side of King of Awesome Sound, regarding it as the Chan Way; or they take raising and scrutinizing what the eye sees and the ear hears, regarding it as the Chan Way; or they take wild and reckless action, striking sparks and flashing lightning, understanding as soon as it is brought up, negating everything, regarding it as the Chan Way. Since these are all wrong, what then is the genuine place? If there were a genuine place, how would it differ from these? One who possesses the eye knows as soon as it is raised.
