This matter permits clever and sharp fellows to shoulder it, yet if one employs cleverness and sharpness, one will have no share in shouldering it. Although the clever and sharp find it easy to enter, it is difficult for them to maintain and protect, because their place of entry is not very deep and their strength is weak. As soon as the clever and sharp hear a good spiritual friend speak of this matter, their eyes dart about, and they have already apprehended and interpreted it with their mental consciousness. Those like this create their own obstacles; for eternal kalpas they will never have a moment of awakening. Calamity caused by external ghosts can still be cured, but this is a domestic relative causing trouble—it cannot be warded off with prayers. Yongjia said: "Damaging the wealth of Dharma and extinguishing merit is all due to this mental consciousness." This is what it means.
