Ascending the hall, [the Master] said: "Mind is Buddha; the Buddha is not far from humanity. No-mind is the Way; the Way is not outside things. The buddhas of the three periods expound the Dharma only with this mind, and save sentient beings only with this Way. Saving sentient beings with this Way, there are no sentient beings to be saved; expounding the Dharma with this mind, there is no Dharma to be expounded. Having no Dharma to be expounded is truly expounding the Dharma; having no sentient beings to be saved is truly saving sentient beings. You should know that the buddhas of the three periods are also like this, and the great assembly present here is also like this." Thereupon he raised his fly-whisk and said, "Do you understand thoroughly?" Again he struck the meditation bed and said, "Like this, like this."
