Ascending the hall at the start of the summer retreat, [the Master said]: "On this day in monasteries everywhere, none fail to mount the bodhisattva vehicle to cultivate the practice of quietude and extinction, taking Great Perfect Awakening as their saṅghārāma, with body and mind dwelling peacefully in the wisdom of equality. Jingshan is not so: from today onward, for ninety days, I will join all you patch-robed monks in eating rice without grains, chewing udumbara roots, drinking water that does not wet, and speaking words in a sleep-dream. Now tell me, how far apart is such practice from the retreat rituals everywhere?" After a long pause he said, "'Offering this profound mind to worlds like dust, / This is termed repaying the Buddha's kindness.'" He stepped down from the seat.
