Ascending the hall, [the Master said]: "Purity of body, speech, and mind is termed the Buddha appearing in the world; impurity of body, speech, and mind is termed the Buddha entering extinction. I now maintain this matter for you; it is never in vain. But what is this matter? And how do you maintain it? Have you not seen: a monk asked Guizong, 'What is the Buddha?' Guizong said, 'If I tell you, will you believe it?' The monk said, 'The Venerable's words are sincere; how would I dare not believe?' Guizong said, 'It is none other than you.' The monk said, 'How do I maintain it?' Guizong said, 'A single speck in the eye, and flowers in the sky fall in confusion.'" The Master said, "Guizong let go too perilously and pulled back too swiftly. If that monk at that moment had clapped his hands and laughed aloud in ha-ha for a round, where would that old fellow Guizong have put his face? I dare ask you all, right now what should be done? / One breath without speaking encompasses all forms; / Where can the myriad spirits offer thanks for impartiality?"
