The Patriarch said: "The mind turns in accord with ten thousand conditions; the place where it turns is truly profound. Following the flow, recognize the nature: there is neither joy nor sorrow." One who truly accords with this mind inwardly sees no person capable of realization, and outwardly sees no dharma that can be realized. The Patriarch's speaking of a place of turning and following the flow was solely to set a provisional stage for those who are confused about this mind and seek outward realization. The Buddha's expounding of the entire canon of teachings—the three thousand great metaphors and the eight hundred small metaphors—is merely writing that speaks of provisional stages. If one says that the Tathāgata really had such a thing, that is slandering the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Saṅgha.
