The fire of the mind blazes fiercely, flaring without rest; greed, anger, and delusion follow upon it like the interlocking links of an iron chain, continuously uninterrupted. If one lacks a resolute determination, as days and months accumulate, one will unconsciously be seized by the demons of the five aggregates. If in a single thought one realizes that conditioned arising is unproduced, without departing from greed, anger, and delusion, one can turn the demon king's seal upside down and drive the demon retinues to become benevolent guardian spirits of the Dharma; moreover, this is not done by force, for the Dharma is just so. Therefore the Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa says: "For people of superior pride, the Buddha said that departing from lust, anger, and delusion is liberation." For those without superior pride, the Buddha said that the nature of lust, anger, and delusion is itself liberation. 'Superior pride' refers to great icchantikas whose good roots are ruined, beings who are not vessels, who do not believe there is a Buddha-vehicle on the shore of birth and death to rely upon and trust. Although such people do not believe, they nonetheless lack nothing in the equal Dharma.
